Clifton was settled late, as New England towns go. The first European settlers didn't arrive until 1812. Originally called Jarvis Gore, the town was incorporated in 1848 as the Town of Maine, but the name was soon changed to the Town of Clifton.

The first settlers were farmers, hunters, and loggers. Clifton grew into a very active farming community through the middle 1860's, but gradually declined in population until 1940. Since 1970 the population has tripled. DemographicsHistorical census data counts for Clifton from Fogler Library, University of Maine Current census and demographics from the U. S.
